Geocache Description:

This cache celebrates the history of Issaquah (Gilman). If you like the railroad I suggest beginning at the old Issaquah Depot Museum. However, if you are looking for a single quick cache you can park at N47 31.790, W122 01.527 and find your way to the Tradition Plateau Trailhead (look for the orange trillium near the I-90 interchange). From the museum you can walk south past the Police Department, toward the Community Center and pick up the Rainier Trail on the eastside of the building. There are several caches along this path (which is the old railroad grade).

* Cache features historical information.
** Requires departure from the railroad grade trail to complete.

Following this path, you will cross 2nd Avenue SE and continue your walk from the High School trailhead. The gently sloping trail will bend around behind the high school and turn north. Follow the gentle incline of the railroad grade to the cache. The cache container is very close to the trail so very little off trail trampling is required.

If you come early in the morning or later in the evening when things have quieted down you might hear the distant sound of a sledge hammer driving a spike or the sound of the train leaving the depot on its way up to Preston and Snoqualmie. You may even feel the ground shake as loggers fell one of the giant Douglas fir trees of the past. Of course if you are here on Sunday you might also think you are target, but don't worry about the shots being fired, they are coming from the Sportsman's/Gun Club range.

If you continue a short distance northward you will cross the Tradition Plateau trail leading to the Issaquah Overlook. From here you can look through the trees right near the present interchange and imagine the Issaquah trestle spanning the valley and the East Fork of Issaquah Creek. At this point you could hike down to Sunset Street and walk back to Memorial Park and the Railroad Depot Museum.
