French's Mountain is located
just north of the Belgrade Lakes. From route 27 turn onto
Watson Pond Road, parking can be found on the side of the
road, at a small turnout. The cache is located on French's
Mountain Trail. The trail, and surrounding area is under the
stewardship of the Belgrade Regional Conservation Alliance.
Nestled between these hills and pristine streams, are acres of
wetlands and five undeveloped ponds which glimmer in the
sunlight like gems in a crown. This region encompasses more
than 6,100 acres and is known as the Kennebec Highlands. The
trail is short but somewhat steep to the summit, with an
elevation gain of around 150'. You will be rewarded by
beautiful views at the summit, of the surrounding lakes and
ponds. Be careful as the trail can be muddy and slippery in
cold weather.
Caution there
are extremely steep and dangerous cliffs at the top
Cache is a medium sized ammo can
hidden away from the summit and the dangerous cliffs. Enjoy the
views, bring the family and a picnic lunch. Thanks to Haffy for
placing this cache in such a beautiful area.
