Hidden in the beautiful Tweedsmuir Provincial Park, this cache takes you to a spot tourists seldom see.
Road access is from a turn-off at the foot (bottom) of "The Hill". A pick-up with high clearance or 4X4 can make this unique drive along the Atnarko River to the Hotnarko trailhead. The government's parks website says the drive from the highway to the cache site is approximately 12 km and takes 1-1/2 hours. One of the photos I've attached is a cut-in on the park's map of the immediate area and this shows the access road off of Hwy 20. The cache is located near the suspension bridge which marks the trail access for Stillwater Lake, Lonesome Lake and Hunlen Falls. If you're here for the hiking, you can continue on but remember that it's a moderate hike to Stillwater and a difficult hike to Hunlen Falls (78 switchbacks, all uphill). While hiding this cache, I encountered 2 black bear cubs (see photo) who bolted up a tree in surprise, a sow grizzly and her 2 cubs (no photo - too far away) and lots of deer. It's a stunningly beautiful drive and I highly recommend you take the time to get off the beaten track. If you do a little extra research, you'll find out this area is full of interesting history (i.e. the Lonesome Lake swans, the Sugarcamp trail, and the Freedom Road, to name but a few). I'm giving this a difficulty of 1.5 and a terrain rating of 4 (because of the driving conditions). Once you park, it's easy terrain and suitable for children.
