Geocache Description:

Walkway or bikeway on old railbed.

This cache marks the spot of a humorous mishap on the old Eastern Railroad, which crossed the Merrimack River near this point. A nearby sign explains the mishap.

After finding the cache, continue 100 yards farther up this walkway to the site of another mishap on the same railroad. That was a classic case of, "The drawbridge was open and the train didn't stop"! Amazingly no one got hurt. You can walk right to the water's edge (but look 40 feet straight up!) and it's easy to imagine how that must have felt. The full history is at click here

Directions: Take the Route 1 access road (Winter St.) south from Merrimack St. (i.e., the river). Go 1 block, passing Joseph's Restaurant, and turn right (west) onto Washington St. After a few houses you'll cross the old railbed. Park on the street. Head north on the walkway, where a sign, "Battis Grove", leads the way. you can walk through the condominium parking lot just to the right, parallel to the trail, then rejoin the trail near the cache site.) The cache is a medium sized lock n lock container
