Geocache Description:

Fort Simcoe State Park, located southwest of White Swan, is a day use park with rest rooms, picnic tables, horseshoe pits, and other amenities. Park hours are 06:30 to dusk, daily April 1 thru September 30, and 08:00 to dusk, weekends and holidays, October 1 thru March 31. The historical buildings and the interpretive center are open 09:30 to 16:30 Wednesday thru Sunday, April 1 thru September 30, and by appointment, October 1 thru March 31.

Due to increased conflict between white settlers and tribes in the Washington Territory, the military needed a post further north than Fort Dalles, Oregon. They began construction on August 8, 1856 in a camping area known by the tribes as “Mool Mool” or bubbling water, around which a large grove of oak trees had grown. In 1859, Fort Simcoe was turned over to the Bureau of Indian Affairs and became the Indian agency headquarters for many years.

Today only five of the original building exist. Several others have been reconstructed.

This cache is a replacement for our original “Hold Down the Fort” cache which was plagued by missing clues and the final cache which went missing twice!! We have redone the clues and steps for this new cache. There are 5 steps for this cache—the first four are micro containers with coordinates. The 5th is a camoed ammo can with various goodies inside. Most of the containers are within 10-20 feet of the existing pathways or lawn area of the park. It is our wish that you come and enjoy the park. The clues will take you on a circular route around the park features, and will take under an hour to complete. We suggest you pack a picnic, come early, do the cache, and then have lunch! The spring wild flowers are lovely, and there are a number of extremely large oak trees on the grounds. Be sure to examine the huge oak near the final cache site. Please carefully conceal the containers where you found them, lest geo-muggles stumble upon them by accident!

NOTE: We have received permission from the Park Ranger to place this cache here. Please abide by all park rules and regulations during your visit.

Waypoint #2 You don't have to look far and wide, in a bush I will hide.

Waypoint #3 Final Cache!

04-12-08 NOTE: We have simplified this cache--making it only 3 waypoints. Several of the waypoints kept vanishing. Therefore, we have eliminated them. There are clues on this page, not only in the waypoint listings, but also in the text and the pictures.

Cache on, dudes !!
