Geocache Description:

One of several caches celebrating local sites where "History Happened Here." There is a number at each of the sites that will reveal the coordinates of the final, celebrated, historical site. To learn which sites have the numbers, see "History Lives-Stick 'em up or Tell it to the Judge"

At this site rests a "Precious One" a Pioneer Baby's Grave. There is a detailed description of the history of the site at a monument along the side of the road. Briefly, Charles Browenstein was born April 16, 1864 and died December 14, 1864 in Red Bluff. He was brought to Shasta to be buried and his grave is all that is left of the cemetery.

In 1923, during the planning phase of the new route for the adjacent highway (now Highway 299W), engineers discovered Charles' headstone and the iron fence surrounding his grave. They also discovered his grave was directly in the line of the new highway. Because of their concern over the fate of Charles' grave, the course of the highway was deliberately changed to higher ground so as to not disturb his gravesite.
