Geocache Description:

This one of the series of Geocaches for which the board of the Save the County (STC) has given permission to be placed on STC properties. Heron Marsh, not to be confused with Green Heron Swamp, is 72 acres in size and is one of STC's Emeralds. It is located in the Towns of Cicero and Clay. This property contains one of the main drainage channels that flows into the Stanley J. Hamlin Wildlife Management Area and hosts a wide variety of waterfowl during the fall migration. There are no parking lots available. The one trail into the site is not marked but is clearly visible and most easily accessed from Lawton Road. Enter the property through the opening in the trees just north of Chateau Lane past the last house, directly across from Fortuna Parkway. Parking is best along Fortuna Parkway, but please don't block private driveways. Heron Marsh isn't called a MARSH for nothing. Therefore:· Take some time to enjoy the solitude and wildlife, including the frog chorus that can be heard at most any time of day.· Wear a long sleeved shirt and long pants and put on some mosquito repellant. Otherwise you may find yourself as the main course for some of the local inhabitants. · There is really only the one trail in and it skirts around the open water area of the site. However, depending on the amount and severity of recent rains, parts of the trail will likely be muddy if not flooded. Be prepared to get your feet muddy and/or wet.· As with most trails, it looks a lot different when walking back to the start point than it does walking in. On your way in, be sure to look back at the trail often so that you don't lose it on your way out.The cache is a medium sized plastic container. Small items are welcomed for trade. As always, please CITO!
