Geocache Description:

This cache is located within the Town Green; a small park located in downtown Cheraw. The above coordinates will take you to a large statue of Jazz Great Dizzy Gillespie, but to find the cache you will have think a little. But before I tell you how to find the cache, here’s a little history on the area.

Across the street from the Town Green you will notice the Town Hall (c.1858)

“The Masons paid for part of this building and used it as a meeting place. The Masonic Lodge contributed some of the funds for the building, so they were given a 99 year lease to occupy the second floor. The exterior double staircase is thought to have been designed by Christopher Werner of Charleston. The building is still used for city offices. Open to the public during normal business hours. It was once also an opera house.”

Adjacent to the Town Hall is the Lyceum Museum (c.1820?).

"Probably built between 1810 and 1825. First used for the Chancery Courts, it became the home of the Cheraw Lyceum in 1856. Their private library was "the" library until Chesterfield County began a public system in 1961. The Lyceum also served as Cheraw's first Telegraph office and was a office for both the Confederate and Union armies. It has been a museum depicting Cheraw's history since 1962. Opened on request at the Chamber.”

Located at the back of the Town Green is a small white wood frame building, the Inglis-McIver Office (c. 1820)

"A small white frame Greek Revival structure moved here from Front Street in 1948. John A. Inglis was chairman of the committee that drew up the SC Ordinance of Secession. This building was one of the few survivors of the explosion on Front St. during the Confederate War. It served as the law office for Inglis, Alexander Mclver and Henry Mclver, who was later was Chief Justice of the SC Supreme Court."

Across the Street from Town Hall, you will notice Market Hall (c. 1837)

"Once used as a public market and court of equity, this steepled building was designed by Conlaw Peter Lynch. Restored by the town, it is used for civic purposes."

More information will be given about Dizzy Gillespie in Part Two of this series.

Now on to the cache…

As I mentioned earlier this is a thinking persons’ cache. It is located within the Town Green, no more than 150 feet from the Statue at the above coordinates. You WILL need to use SOME of the information provided on this page. Some parts of this page are extraneous, some are not. It is a Micro, not too big and not too small (about 3-4 inches), and it is not buried, covered, under logs, fences, or rocks. Nor do you need any ladders, platform shoes, buckets, or anything else to reach upwards. Actually the cache is in plain view… if you are looking at it from the right angle. Although it blends well with the surroundings you don't need to tear anything up to find it!

Please remember to bring a pen to sign the log. The Cache printout may be helpful too... As always, to count this as a find the cache log must be signed.

Please do not add any spoilers or other hints within your log, even encrypted... I'd hate to ruin the experience for the next hunter.

I will be happy to give another hint if needed, although I'll give better hints if a DNF is posted.

Good Luck!
