Quick and Dirty
  • Event Name:
  • GHAGAFAP III - Third Time Lucky
Golden Horseshoe Area Geocachers And Friends Annual Picnic
  • Date:
  • Saturday, September 18, 2004
  • Time:
  • 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m

  • Valens Conservation Area
    Drumlin Pavilion Picnic Shelter

  • Who:
  • In short... anybody!  If you want to attend, we'll be delighted to see you.  GAGAFAP I and GAGAFAP II drew folks from all over Ontario and a few from the USA.  Maybe there'll be a prize for the furthest traveller.
  • What:
  • Geocaching and Picnic fun!
  • Cost:
  • Park admission plus voluntary donations to cover expenses.

    What's a GHAGAFAP Anyway?
GHAGAFAP.  For those of you paying attention, you'll notice a slight change in the name this year.

It's a picnic for Geocachers.  There'll be caches to hunt, travel bugs to trade, games to play, food and drinks to consume, lots of Geocaching conversation, and prizes galore!

Bring your families, your friends, and your geo-dogs too.  Don't forget your GPS units!

Update!  Lawn chairs might not be a bad idea.  I think we're gonna fill up the picnic shelter!

The event is open to anybody.    We're hoping to draw folks from all over Ontario, from New York, Pennsylvania and Michigan, and beyond!

    Valens Conservation Area  (Updates!)
Valens Conservation Area website has a bunch of interesting info, but here are some highlights that you should take note of:
  •
  • Update!  Admission fee is $7.50 per vehicle and driver, plus $2.50 for each additional passenger to a maximum of $15.00.
  •
  • Dogs are allowed. (I would assume that cats are allowed too, but who brings a cat to a picnic?)
  •
  • Alcohol is not allowed.
  •
  • It's about a thirty minute return trip to the nearest Tim Hortons in Cambridge!
  •
  • Camping is available in the park for those wanting to make it a weekend event.
Buttons and Beaux have booked The Meadows group camping area for any GHAGAFAPers wanting to camp in the park.
    • Update! Buttons and Beaux will be hosting a breakfast on Sunday morning for all those campers that are staying overnight on Saturday.  Bacon, eggs, toast and coffee will be served!  Way to go Buttons and Beaux!

    GAGAFAP's Gone By
  •
  • The inaugural GAGAFAP was a great success!  We had a great turnout and a super time in October 2002.  For those of you that missed the event (or those who just want to reminisce,) take a look at the GAGAFAP I cache page.
  •
  • The GAGAFAP II - The Sequel was a blast!  About 100 geocachers braved the brisk and damp morning weather and gathered for a day of fun in September 2003.  The GAGAFAP II cache page can be seen here.

    Fun and Games Stuff  (Updates!)
  •
  • There are numerous caches in area.  How many have you found?
  •
  • Some fun Geocaching type games are in the planning stages.  Participate in all or none!  Become famous!  Win fabulous prizes!
  •
  • Anybody want to organize a Geocaching (or non-geocaching) event?  Speak up!
Keep in mind that this is an HCA conservation area, and we all need to abide by their rules regarding permanent Geocaches.  Temporary caches, just set out for the day should cause no concern... it's really nothing more than a high-tech scavenger hunt.
    Current List of Event Planners:
    • Laura of Buttons and Beaux very kindly offered to set up a kids event.  She'll need numbers and ages.
    • Hard Oiler will be running a "Closest to the Pin" event
    • Jeff Trex has promised a cache or two to hunt
    • TrimblesTrek will be running a special BINGO cache event
    • Amazon Annie will be hiding a multi-cache.  Warning... Annie is an evil, evil woman!
    • TrimblesTrek will be hiding a multi-cache.  You'll have to find the cache if you want access to the TrimblesTrek Trunk of Treasures!  Um... it turns out that TrimblesTrek is a little evil too!
    • Tomtec will once again be running his very popular Poker Run event!  Thanks Dan!
    • Keith Watson (aka Keith Watson) has promised to entertain us with his "Floating Cache".  No rowboats required!
    • Update!  Night caching anyone?  Tomtec will have his BFL charged and ready to light up the night!

    Edible Stuff
This year, we're going to try something different.  If you are able, I'm asking that each of you:
    • Bring your own main course.  We'll have BBQ grills fired up for your use, so bring whatever puts the hitch in your giddyup for yourselves... Chicken, steak, burgers, dogs, sausages.  We'll likely have a couple of Coleman stoves too.
    • Bring a dish to share with the group.  If you want to participate, bring your favourite picnic dish... salads, desserts, hors d'ouvres, chips and cheezies, drinks, Aunt Martha's baked beans... anything goes!  We're not going to try to organize this... if we end up with 4000 Rice Krispies squares, so be it!
    • We were at the 1st Annual, International Geo-Caching Social in Michigan.  The food was handled in a similar manner and it worked out great!
Update!  Turns out that Valens have giant BBQ's and will drop one off at our picnic shelter.  All we need is charcoal.  I'll bring a bag or two.

    Prize Stuff  (Updates!)
Last year, everyone came through with some really great prizes!  We're hoping for the same again this year.

Most of the event type caches we have attended follow the "Want a prize?  Bring a prize." philosophy.  So please try to bring prizes if you want to come away with prizes.  And please select fairly when it's your turn at the prize table.

When you register, your names will be logged, and you'll receive a door prize ticket each member of your group.  Don't lose your tickets!  They won't be replaced!!!

Everybody loves to come away with a prize... Please help if you can!

Update!  Buttons and Beaux have managed to wrangle some Prizes from Cogeco.  Thanks Cogeco!  Thanks Buttons and Beaux!  (again!)

    Co-Conspirators  (Updates!)
This year, we are honoured to be assisted by the clever and talented  Amazon Annie.

Annie has kindly offered to help with the organization of the picnic, and I, always looking for a way to get out of work, gladly accepted.
    - Annie has solved the Riddle of the Sphinx and is now ready to figure out how many litres of water will be needed to satisfy Flicks pony.
    - That one was too easy.  Everybody knows Flicks pony drinks beer!
    - Her next task is to figure out a way to stop Res, KWakaKW, and the rest of that crazy Lord Simcoe caching crew from turning this into a 24 hour, non-stop, cache 'til you drop, picnic marathon!

Update!  We were cycling around Valens recently, scoping cache locations.  The look of pure evil glee on Annie's face when she found one particular location is one I won't soon forget.  All I can say is I'm glad she's on my side!

  •
  • If anyone else would like to help out with something specific, please get in touch with Annie or me and let us know what you can do.
    Other Contributions:
    • Team Bean Burrito will be bringing a display board for Travel Bugs trading.
    • Amazon Annie has obtained a Coffee Urn from the owner of the Angel Rock Cafe.  Thanks Nancy!
    • Buttons and Beaux have offered to bring along a P.A system.
    • chris-mouse will be bringing a supply of hot chocolate..
    • TrimblesTrek: Coleman stove and electric kettle
    • chris-mouse: Coleman stove
    • Hiking Cockroaches: Coleman stove
    • Update!  We've got enough Coleman stoves now!  Thanks!
    • Olar:  A pop-up shelter.... just in case of bad weather, and we spill out of the picnic shelter!
    • Coupar-Angus:  Coffee
    • Update!  Rideau Rangers have promised to bring cream and sugar.  Thanks!

    Ivan the Terrible  (New!)
Hurricane Ivan was threatening to dampen our day for awhile.  This isn't a new thing to GHAGAFAPers.  The first year, Hurricane Lily made her presence known.  Last year, I think it was Isabel that got us wet.

Update!  It looks like Ivan isn't going to be a problem now. Yeah!

GHAGAFAP will go on, rain or shine!!

      Forecast of Ivan's path
