Geocache Description:

A traditional cache in the second oldest game reserve in the world.

Other Caches in this Series: Urban Tag #1 (GCGYQ4)
Scotland The Brave (UT#3)(GCMKAK)

On the 25 February 1895, President Paul Kruger proclaimed the valley on the southern outskirts of Pretoria as a game sanctuary. Thus the Groenkloof Nature Reserve was established, the first game reserve on the African continent, and only the second in the world. (The first was the Yellowstone National Park in the USA). The reserve is a mere 5km from Church Square in Pretoria, and therefore fitting to be part of my Urban Tag series.

The reserve hosts a number of activities. There are trails, Mountain Bike Trails, Motorcar routes, and 4x4 routes. There are overnight huts and picnic facilities, you can even hire mountain bikes. The reserve is a paradise for birders and trees and trails are well marked. There are numerous mammals, and while placing the cache we were carefully watched by two Giraffe. We also spotted, Blesbok, Blue Wildebeest, Red Hartebees, Dassies, and the highlight must have been the Zebra which included a newborn which must have been born the day before as it was still very shaky on its legs.

The cache is in a 2.5l container covered with a hessian bag. It has been placed on the longer trail, marked with yellow footprints. Follow the trail (2-3km) until you reach a point perpendicular to the cache which is situated at a viewpoint overlooking the reserve, Fort Klapperkop, Voortrekker Monument, and Pretoria City. The cache is about 80m from the path. The 4x4 and MB routes pass nearby as well, so the cache can be accessed if you are doing one of these activities. The cache is hidden in a small crevice and has been covered by a number of loose rocks.

The route is well marked, so do not deviate onto paths which are not marked by the yellow footprint markers.
