Geocache Description:

Windward Oahu, Kahana Valley Steep and muddy

To make this one hard to find I’m not going to tell you where the trail head is. I will say that you should enter Kahana Valley and park just outside the resident area. Walk thru the housing and go around the gate. Hike up to the Hunter/Hiker Check-in Station.I did not make it to Pu`u Pauao today.
After plotting the cache location on the map I see I was about 4/5 of the way there. BUT there was the hardest, longest, steepest section to go. It was 12 noon and I quit at noon. I started walking at 8:30 a.m. from the Hunter/Hiker check in station. You will have to add the walk thru the housing area and from the gate to the check in station to your figures.
Hints to find trail head
1-Think safe hydration.
2-When you find a source of safe hydration (you can't drink there) think about where the cache should be, and look for one very long yellow ribbon and tied next to it a short red one. I cannot say how long these ribbons will last. Some people like to tear them down.
Once on the trail
1-Follow the trail it has been marked w/red and pink ribbons and was cleared on June 6th 2004.
2-The Uluhe has been cut back w/weed wackers and the trail is in top shape as of the above date.
3-Be careful. It can be VERY steep and depending on the weather VERY muddy.
4-Once on the ridge top the views are fantastic. Bring a camera and a water proof bag incase it rains.
5-Looking into Kahana Valley from the ridge top trail there are a number of spots where you can see the trail to my Pu`u O`Kila cache as it wanders thru the Uluhe far below. Perhaps you will get a hint as to how to find that cache. So far no one has found it.

When you get to the coordinates look for the scene in the photo.
Then turn 180 degrees and think about Hobbits and where they like to live.

1-Log book and pencil
2-Vivitar 35 mm Point and Shoot Camera (no film no batteries but it works)
3-Paperback novel “Neanderthal”
4-One light stick
5-Six maps to show you a save return since I’m not sure if you will find the right trail up to the ridge top.
