Before there was Epcot, Seaworld, and Busch Gardens. Even before
there was Disney World, there was Bongoland.
Bongoland was a small tourist attraction tucked away in the
sleepy coastal town of Port Orange, FL. Assembled on the property
that was once the Dunlawton Plantion Sugar Mill, the ruins of the
Mill were one of the achors of the park. An authentic Indian
village, a minature steam railroad, full scale concrete models of
terrifying dinosaurs, real dinosaur bones and fossils, and exotic
plants made up the balance of the exhibits at Bongoland. Oh, I
almost forgot.. There was Bongo the resident Baboon - displayed in
a large cage on the property.
Unfortunately, the founders of Bongoland were a bit ahead of the
times. Bongoland never achieved economic success and closed quietly
in the late 1950s
Fast forward 50 years. Now, the ruins of the Sugar Mill and the
old concrete dinosaurs are surrounded by lush and exotic plants.
Lizards, cats, and squirrels scamper through the undergrowth. The
property is now a peaceful botanical garden in the very shadow of
the chaos of Daytona Beach. For the price of a small donation, you
can walk the grounds and pathways and enjoy an unusual mixture of
things tacky, historical, and beautiful.
The cache is a 35mm film canister. It is hidden on a small
bridge leading to Bongoland. There is no need to leave the pathway,
move heavy stones, or disturb the nearby plants. Please be sure to
use caution when retrieving and replacing the cache -- you could
easily push it to a place where it cannot be retrieved. Bring your
own pen.
