This cache will take you on a tour through the history and topography of the Maurice River Bluffs Preserve. This land has been privately owned and off limits to the public for over two decades but now is publicly accessible, as the Nature Conservancy has purchased the area for the public to enjoy. "The Maurice River Bluffs Nature Preserve is one of the most beautiful and ecologically valuable sites managed by The Nature Conservancy in the Delaware Bayshores."
You will explore the bluffs and be led on a short tour of the area while searching for the Final Cache and the Logbook.
In March of 2004 the Nature Conservancy purchased a large lot of land in Millville between Silver Run Road and the Maurice River. This land has been undisturbed and well guarded for the last two decades and is now known as the Maurice River Bluffs Nature Preserve. This land is open to the public despite the numerous “No Trespassing” signs still posted throughout the property. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, the Maurice River Bluffs was used as a sand mining facility, as the sand in the area is naturally “glass grade”. The Maurice River provided easy transportation of sand and materials to and from the glass factories in Millville. The topography of the Bluffs area is unlike any you will see in southern New Jersey. The area is covered with wild roses and currently has two active Eagle nests along with a variety of other unique animals. This cache will end with a spectacular view of the Maurice River from the bluffs and is a must see area. SPECIAL NOTE: “No Trespassing” – you might see some old signs throughout the Maurice River Bluffs Nature Preserve. The land was only recently purchased and all of these signs have not yet been removed. Concerned with the “No Trespassing” signs we contacted the Nature Conservancy of New Jersey and have been assured that – THIS IS PUBLIC ACCESS LAND. The trail entrance is located on Silver Run Road in Millville at N-39°21.182 W-075°02.271. At the Nature Conservancy's request - do not drive down or park on the trail and please make sure that your vehicle is not blocking the trail entrance. While the parking along Silver Run Road is not great, vehicles are not allowed in Conservancy land.
The first stage of this cache is hidden in what is referred to as a "Typical Piney Fashion". This fist stage will give you the coordinates for the final cache location and instructions for the areas that you will be visiting on your journey.
Near the end of the trail that you will be walking down there is a large RED "No Trespassing" sign. This IS a valid sign and and marks the end of the Nature Conservancy land. Please do not venture down the last 100 yards of the trail. Instead their is a footpath to the left - follow your GPS towards the final cache location and you will easily avoid trespassing. Also please note any areas that the Conservancy has marked as "Closed Areas" are restricted.
