Geocache Description:

The second in a series of cemetery caches by Brainerd and Cachepal. This one will take you on a tour of the final resting places of some of Tinsel Town's most beloved celebrities, and the great artwork at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the Hollywood Hills. There are some stairs involved, some slopes to negotiate, and there is some walking on the grass.

Unlike the first "Eternal Fame" in Glendale, this one has an actual cache at the end of the tour, with clues along the way that will lead you to its hiding place.

What do you expect to see at a cemetery in the Hollywood Hills? Celebrity grave sites? Sure. And you'll see some on this tour. In fact, there are so many famous people here, we've included a "bonus list" below.

But what will amaze you is the beautiful artwork and incredible architecture on the property. Ever seen a replica of The Old North Church? The Liberty Bell? You will on this cache. Be sure to schedule several hours so that you can complete and enjoy your tour.

Now, this isn't going to be a carefree walk in the "park". Each of the destinations on this journey will contain information that you will need to complete the Coordinate Formula, leading to the final cache. We have created an Answer Worksheet (click here) for you to fill out during your tour. The Coordinate Formula is as follows:

Please be respectful of the cemetery grounds, properties, and other visitors. The park is open daily from 8 to 5. A general map of the roads and building locations is available at the Information Booth just inside the entrance. Simply ask for a map, and they will give you one. Caution: They will not answer questions about celebrity grave locations. Also, please be respectfully stealthy, and please do not ask the staff for additional assistance.

OK, here we go…

The first set of coordinates listed below takes you to the Main Entrance to Forest Lawn. Drive on in, and proceed to the first waypoint (parking is usually availible with in 150' of the waypoints).a

EasyGPS file (EasyGPS Help)

Coordinate Letter B: Subtract 1919 from the year of his birth.

    4) N34 08.847 W118 19.665
Moses. This is an exact reproduction of Michelangelo's masterpiece in pure white Carrara marble. The horns on Moses' head are due to a misinterpretation in the Bible of Michelangelo's day. The word "shone" in Exodus 34:29 was mistranslated as "horned." Thus, Michelangelo read, "And Moses knew not that his face was horned," rather than "his face shone."
Coordinate Letter H: Is Moses seated or standing? The answer is 1 if seated, 2 if standing.
  • Drive to the next waypoint
    5) N34 08.751 W118 19.431
Say hello to "America's Favorite Family." Once you locate Ozzie and Harriet, walk two rows up and two spaces to your left. This "Travelin' Man's" travels ended here - it's Ricky's (Eric's) final resting place.
Coordinate Letter J: How many letters are in his middle name?
  • Dorothy Lamour lies 600' down the hill. If you are interested, look for bonus grave site B04.
  • Drive to the next two waypoints
    6) N34 09.005 W118 19.255
This actress "did it the hard way."
Coordinate Letter E: What is the last number of the year of her birth?

7) N34 08.986 W118 19.207
He was a consummate pianist, but he became famous for his flamboyance and flair. He once said: "Too much of a good thing is won-derful!"
Coordinate Letter M: How many letters are there in the family name?

  • 8) N34 08.988 W118 19.184
"The Man on the Silver Mountain" was a bassist, vocalist and heavy metal rock band icon. He was most closely associated with 'Rainbow' in the '70's, and 'Black Sabbath' in the '80's. He introduced the "horns" gesture to rock music audiences.
Coordinate Letter C: What is the last digit of the year of his death?
  • Bonus grave sites BO5-B11 are located in this area. Check them out if you have the time or the interest.
  • Drive to the next waypoint. You may leave your car here for the remaining waypoints. Round trip, you will be going on an .8 mile walk.

9) N34 08.577 W118 19.049
This is America's largest historical mosaic: "The Birth of Liberty" stands 162' long and 28' high, depicting 25 famous scenes of our nation's struggle for independence. How many pieces of tile are there? Subtract 10,002,238 from that number. Just kidding. There are over 10 million pieces of tile. Behind you, and to your left, is a statue of Jefferson. Did you know that he died on July 4th? Well now you do.
Coordinate Letter D: Subtract 1957 from the date of the copyright for the mosaic.

10) N34 08.567 W118 19.045
Liberty Bell and Hall of Liberty Entrance. The bell is an exact reproduction of the original in Philadelphia. (There are public restrooms located inside the Hall of Liberty)
Coordinate Letter A: The Liberty Bell was cast twice. The date of the second casting is prominently displayed on the bell. What is the last number in the year of its casting (175?)?

11) N34 08.575 W118 19.146
Lincoln Terrace. The Terrace features a 10-foot high statue of Abraham Lincoln by Augustus St. Gaudens which is flanked by a panoramic mosaic depicting key incidents of Lincoln's life. Coordinate Letter F: Subtract 1968 from the date of the copyright for the mosaic.

  • Scatman Crothers & William Conrad lie nearby. Look for bonus grave sites B12 and B13.

12) N34 08.640 W118 19.047
He was half of one of the greatest comedy duos in motion picture history. (The other half is buried not far from here, at Valhalla in North Hollywood)
Coordinate Letter L: Subtract 1881 from the year of his birth.

13) N34 08.645 W118 19.063
"Come and knock on his grave." Poor taste. We apologize. This actor/comedian died far too young. His unexpected death occurred on the set in Burbank. He was born and died in the same hospital. Brainerd had the joy of meeting him twice when they were both on Broadway. Cachepal had the pleasure of working on a promo with him. He is missed.
Coordinate Letter N: Subtract the first number of the year of his death from the last number of the year of his death.

  • Bonus grave sites B14-B16 are located in this area. Check them out if you have the time or the interest.

14) N34 08.686 W118 19.051

Coordinate Formula Letter K: During how many bitter years of war did George wear that uniform? You didn't realize that the Revolutionary War lasted that long, did ya? Subtract 5 from that number.

15) N34 08.683 W118 19.057
Known for his deadpan expression and porkpie hat, this comedian is ranked with Charlie Chaplin as one of the greatest of the silent screen legends.
Coordinate Letter I: Subtract 1894 from the year of his birth.

  • Marty Feldman is 131' away. Double-back past the plaque for the Court of Liberty to find bonus grave site B17.

16) N34 08.726 W118 19.068
The Old North Church. Boston's fabled church of Paul Revere fame, has been faithfully re-created at Forest Lawn. The wineglass pulpit and inspirational inscriptions found inside the original church in Boston are featured, and a historical room presents mementos from the Colonial period. You do not need to go inside for the information. Let the coordinates be your guide. You should take a peek inside, if there is not a service under way. An entrance to the bathrooms is located on the South exterior of the church
Coordinate Letter O: Near the beginning of Longfellow's poem, "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere," he writes: "________ if by land, and two if by sea..." Insert the correct number in the blank.

That's it. You should now have the coordinates to the cache container location, and you can drive right to it. Please note: The cache used to be an ammo can, but over the years two of them have been placed, and then disappeared. So we've learned our lesson: the cache is now much smaller, but hopefully much safer! (Caution: Please be "respectfully stealthy" - that is, respect those who are there to visit the gravesites -- and wait patiently for them to clear before you reach for the cache) Go get it!

  • There are two bonus stops for you on the way out of the Memorial Park. Check out the Church of the Hills and the Garden of Prayer at B18 and B19.

For more information on what other famous people are buried at this cemetery, check out findagrave.com. You may also wish to go to the Forest Lawn - Hollywood Hills Web site.

Ooper's Cache is less than .7 of a mile away. However, it is about 1200' further up! If you want a nice hike to the tallest peak in the Hollywood Hills, then this is a cache for you. It's on the peak just to the right of the peak with the towers. BTW. The Hollywood Sign is on the opposite side of the peak with the towers.
