The cache (an ammo box) is about 500m ENE of Pen Pumlumon Fawr (752m/2468') and is hidden under a boulder (part of a boulder field) on a very steep slope above Llyn Llygad Rheidol. The views north to the mountains of Snowdonia are fantastic. The slope is a mass of boulders and crags, so it's probably worth taking copies of the "location aid" photos (links further down this page) for use only in desperation, if you want to be really sure of finding the cache.
Original Contents: a Hillscape Cookbook, an audio CD, an emergency plastic raincoat (in case you ignore the advice in the next paragraph), and a notebook for recording your visit.
This cache is located in remote, elevated, exposed mountain terrain. There are no paths near it, and you will need to walk at least 2 miles to reach it, and to negotiate marshy ground and steep, rocky slopes. There is no shelter; it is not a place to be in foul weather!
Where to start
1. "Easiest" is from GR SN768874, where a vehicle track leads off the surfaced road by Nant-y-moch reservoir. Follow the track up to Llyn Llygad Rheidol, then go round the east shore of the lake, then head uphill. It is very steep, but there is no need for scrambling or rock climbing; you can easily by-pass any crags or boulders that you encounter.
2. From Pen Pumlumon Fawr summit (GR SN789869). Don't go straight from the summit to the cache - there are crags in the way. Instead follow the fence east for 400m to a large cairn (GR SN794870) and go in from there.

Coll was a mad, fun-loving, walkaholic sheepdog, who knew most of the Welsh mountains. He sadly died in February 2004, and the cache was hidden on what would have been his 8th birthday.
