Chough Cache Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
If you intend on doing all of the 5 caches along the Benbulben you will need OSI Sheet 16 Map . As with all mountain caches we recommend that you are competent with a map and compass, carry the required equipment for a day in the mountains, dress appropriately, give yourself enough time in order not to get benighted and check the weather forecast in advance.
This Cache is located on a high lofty knoll. It overlooks, Glencar Lake and Sligo Bay, with views as far as Mayo on a good day. From the main road it is a pleasant 4 to 5 Km hike up to the cache via an old bog road. The first half of the hike is along a paved track up through a wood. The track takes on a rougher appearance when it exits the wood. Good walking shoes or boots would be advisable for this hike. A Mountain Bike would also be an ideal mode of transport to access this cache, especially for the downhill descent. Visit Glencar Waterfall while in the area, the car-park here is the best place to start from.
This cache is part 1 of the "Benbulbin Whistle Stop Tour" of which there are five stops. The tour is approximately 12km long, one way. The caches have been laid by ourselves, Spy Caleb & Buddha Belly. We suggest that you park and start at the Glencar Waterfall car-park, which is in Grid Square G76 43 of the OSI Map Sheet 16 and finish below Benbulbin at G698 473. If you don't fancy the trek back it might be a good idea to leave another car here to ferry you back to the start. If following this route the caches may be picked up in the following order;
Part 1 Chough Cache
Part 2 Your Place or Mine?
Part 3 Mountain Madness
Part 4 Rave at the Cave
Part 5 Skylark.
Have a great time, The Two Amigos
