Geocache Description:

In Pokagon State Park, behind the Nature Center.

Cache is an ammo box, behind the Nature Center. The title is an homage to Eric Sherwood, a very active geocacher and wonderful person. See the green text below for more details. There is a fee to enter the park: $4 per car for Indiana residents Mon - Thursday, and $5 weekends and holidays (or you can buy an annual pass for $36), or $7 per car for out-of-state residents (annual pass: $46).
While you're here, take the time to check out the other caches in the park and all the trails. It's really a beautiful park.
ATTENTION HANDICACHERS: If you require a wheelchair and would like to explore some of the trails, the Nature Center has a powered "all-terrain" wheelchair available for loan. It's on a first-come, first-served basis; you just have to ask for it.
Pokagon has several campsites and an Inn if you'd like to make it an overnight trip. Non-caching things to go include horseback ridind from the Saddle Barn, swimming in the lake, and (in the Wintertime), a Toboggan Run.
Make SURE you have bug spray! You will need it! Dogs are welcome in the park as long as they are on-leash.

Please note: Park closes at 11:00pm. If you are leaving a trade item, please DO NOT leave food. It attracts insects and other critters. Please put the cache back where you found it. It should not be easily visible from any angle.

New logging rule effective 03/29/06: Logs mentioning any commercial offsite game not approved by Groundspeak, Inc., are subject to deletion by the cache owner.

Information of interest: in November of 2005, a careless trash-burning got out of hand and burned part of the park near the Nature Center and Second Nature. We have taken some pictures of the burned area and they are now posted to this page.

Eric "SherwoodForest" was a very special Geocacher. A Self-Proclaimed Ambassador, he not only represented the Northeast Ohio Geocachers at events in other areas, he was an advocate for the entire sport to park districts, lawmakers, and even people on the street. You might think that with an attitude like this, that Eric might have been arrogant or boastful. Nothing could be further from the truth. Eric has a mild demeanor that earned him the common description "Gentle Giant". Eric won friends by listening. He encouraged and welcomed the people who were least convinced of their sanity in enjoying such an underground sport. He encouraged people on to their personal bests and challenged all of us to expect more from ourselves. Eric is partly responsible for many big initiatives in Ohio. He was instrumental in the formation of GeocacheOhio (GO) and the Midwest GeoBash. He helped promote the All-Ohio Women's Event and aided in the flight of the men-folk with the matching "Ohio Men's Escape Weekend". Eric is truely missed, but in so many ways his influence is all around us. It's in the people, the caches and the culture of Geocaching. To represent this, we have chosen to dedicate a series of caches that we hope will represent the impact that our friend, SherwoodForest had on our sport and our lives. As Eric would say, "Cache well, and see you 'round the bend."

In Eric's honor, this cache has joined the Badger Patrol.

This cache is a MUSHROOM cache, due to the fact that there are several edible types of mushrooms in Pokagon, including the very tasty puffball mushroom, and the coveted Morel mushroom. Some have been found very near this cache. As always, cache and eat at YOUR OWN RISK. We do not suggest that all the mushrooms around this cache are edible. If you do not know which ones ARE safe to eat, please do not eat them! Ask a DNR representative which ones are safe.
