Geocache Description:

The cache is place on an island in the middle of the Flat River just south of Greenville. It will be easy to find but the terrain is listed at 5 due to the fact it requires a canoe/kayak to get to the cache.

This cache was placed to encourage the more adventurous cachers to get out and see a bit of nature along the Flat River. You will be sure to see a lot of wildlife as you paddle down the river – turtles (saw a very large snapping turtle last summer), deer, birds of all sizes (some as tall as four to five feet), etc… Around every curve and bend you’ll discover more about Michigan’s inland waterways. Many archeology digs have been undertaken during the summer months along the Flat River, many Indian artifacts have been found. Additionally lumber was transported down the river during the 1800s, some of the logs from that era can still be seen from time to time in different areas along the river, especially when the water levels are low.

The river is easy to canoe/kayak and would be safe to bring children along (my wife and I took our son along with us when he was only three years old - should always use a life jacket though). Occasionally there will be a large rock to watch out for or a fallen tree but the river is true to its name – flat.

There are a number of places you can put your canoe/kayak in at. The closest spot north of the island is located at N43 09.018 and W085 15.140; the closest spot south of the island is located at N43 07.186 and W085 13.459. The trip takes about two hours going from the northern location to the southern one. Parking is permitted at each location. The river flows from north to south. You could kayak (canoe would be difficult) up or down the river and return to your starting point if you have only one transport vehicle. The shortest two-way trip would be entering from the north (takes about a half hour to get to the island from the north). If there are two of you and you have two vehicles you could park one at the south end, go north to enter the river, paddle to the vehicle you parked on the south end and then drive back to the vehicle you parked at the starting point. If you are looking for a longer canoe/kayak trip you can enter the river farther north within the city of Greenville at either N43 10.625 and W085 14.848 or N43 10.199 and W085 15.044 - parking is permitted at both locations (there is a public port-a-john at the N43 10.625 and W085 14.848 staging area).

My wife and I bring a small screened in tent with us and take some time to enjoy a picnic lunch, listen to the water flow over nearby rocks and fallen trees, listen to the wind blowing through the trees, feel the breeze on our faces and spend time with our daughter and son. This is a very secluded spot that immediately begins to provide you with a sense of solitude and relaxation.
