Metz was settled in 1879 along the Detroit & Mackinac Railroad, and became known as a rowdy town. The saloons served nickel beers and stayed open until the customers ran out of money. The historical marker nearby tells the story of the 1908 fire which destroyed the entire town, and as far as loss of life, was the worst fire in Michigan history. There are also some pictures of how the town looked before that fateful day. Some of the town was rebuilt, including the only business still left in town today, a bar that originally started out as a hotel & saloon. Although considered a ghost town today by some, at one time 2 trains a day served a population that numbered up to 700 in 1910.
