BEYERS LAKES

Nestled in a rocky-granite landscape that
is bordered by fir trees, Beyers Lakes are a group of lakes
situated in the Grouse Ridge area of Tahoe National Forest.
These lakes are home to cutthroat and rainbow trout and are
considered by some to be the best fishing in the Grouse Ridge
area. The lakes are now home to a new cache that we placed
during a recent backpacking trip to the region.
The hike to the cache is approximately 6¼
miles from the trailhead at Indian Springs OHV staging area and has
an elevation gain of about 1500', most of which is in the last 3
miles. If you do this hike on a weekend, you will most likely
share the trail with 4-wheelers the first 1¾ miles. However,
once you pass Eagle Lakes and beautiful Fordyce Creek (photo at
right), you enter the non-motorized area of Grouse Ridge where the
trail becomes a single-track that takes you through rocky terrain
and beautiful meadows. A well-condition hiker could probably
do this hike as a day hike, but we would recommend an overnight
stay at a nice campsite located at N39° 22.978 W120° 33.340.
This would allow you time to explore the lakes and other tarns and
waterfalls in the area. Click here to see a
topo map of the route we took and an elevation profile of the
hike. Happy trails and remember...
Have fun, be safe and tread
lightly!
The cache is
a 5”x 5”x 2” Tupperware container that has been camouflaged.
Initial contents were:
- Backpacker's knife
- Crater Lake pin
- Stanford Life flight pin
- A WheresGeorge dollar bill
- Carabiner multi-use
