Geocache Description:

This cache will take you on somewhat of a historical tour of Sanford. And, hopefully by the end you will be able to understand who the small town of Sanford was named after.

Note: The road closest to the cache (Center St) will be closed from November 27, 2023 through December 31, 2024 for reconstruction of the dam. You can still access the cemetery using Oak St, but the walk to the first stage will be farther.

Stage One

The cords for this cache will take you to the Jerome Township Cemetery where you will need to find the headstone that looks like the one pictured below near where the coordinates are.

The headstone, with years masked.
The headstone, with years masked.

Then you will need a calculator to do some simple calculations. Take the year that Charles Sanford was born and then divide it by four, then subtract 125. This will leave you with a three digit number. Replace the XXX below with this number.

N43° 40.XXX'

Now take the year that Charles Sanford died and subtract 1027. This will leave you with another three digit number. Replace the XXX below with this number.

W84° 22.XXX'

Stage One (Accessible Version)

Visit Sanford Historical Society's article on Charles Sanford. Utilize the article to answer the questions above and complete the calculations. Stage Two is on a level surface with accessible parking nearby.

Stage Two can be completed almost any time of the day. Stage One must be done while there is light. As it is in a cemetery, searching around at night is disallowed.

You can validate your puzzle solution with certitude.

Stage Two

The second part of this cache lies at the this set of coordinates you just calculated. This part is located somewhere in Downtown Sanford less than a half-mile from the first part. Once you reach this location you'll find the bench located right in the center of the webcam. If you're attempting this cache after the snow flies, the bench might be gone. Parking is located in almost every direction nearby.
