Längst in i Gamlebyviken vid Garpedansbergets fot ligger Gamleby. År 1275 finns orten nämnd för första gången, då som "villa forensis Væstervik", en plats "väster i vik". Vid 1400-talets mitt flyttades staden av strategiska skäl ut till kusten och har idag namnet Västervik vilken ligger där den tre mil långa Gamlebyviken börjar. Det som var kvar när ”Västervik” flyttades kallades just Gamla Västervik fram till 1700-talets mitt då Gamleby blev dess namn.
Den röda långa granitklippa som härskar över Gamleby, Garpedansberget, har fått sitt namn från jätten Garpe. Sägnen berättar att i Garpedansberget, finns en vacker kammare fylld av guld och klenoder och där ligger också den sovande prinsessan Alfsol. En modig, stilig yngling genomsöker berget och med en kärlekskyss väcker han Alfsol. Han kan senare glädja sig åt, inte bara prinsessans skönhet utan också Garpes rikedom.
Year 1275 Gamleby was mentioned for the first time as "villa forensis Væstervik", a place at the west side of the bay. In the middle of 15-th century the city was by strategic reasons, moved 30 km to the coast and has today the name Västervik. What was left after the city has moved was called Gamla Västervik (the Old Västervik) until the middle of 18-th century when it was named Gamleby.
The mountain Garpedansberget has got its name from the giant Garpe. The legend tells that inside the mountain Garpedansberget is a room filled with gold and there is also the princess Alfsol sleeping. A brave and handsome man search the mountain and with a love kiss he wakes up the princess. Later he can enjoy both the beauty of the princess but also all the gold that belonged to the giant Garpe.
