St. Michaels Church of Pfoutz Valley sits in one of the most beautiful valleys of Perry County. The fertile land and rich soil make this one of the best farming areas. St. Michaels Church has a long history dating back to before 1770 (in some accounts in local history books).
It was on this site a horrible massacre took place by the Indians, of the first white settlers to this area. Legend has it they were tied to an oak tree that sat on the corner of the cemetery, brutally murdered by the Indians arrows, and buried near where this happened. History books record this tree stood for many years, as a reminder to the generations, at the corner of the graveyard property. Even before a church was built here about 1770, a schoolhouse on the property served as a place of worship. Men came with shotguns to stand guard during services. Indians and wildcats were always a threat to the church folk.
As one stands on this ground made sacred by the blood of our ancestors, we pause and think of their sacrifices to hear and share the Gospel. Ministers traveled by horseback to reach the area. The bell that rang through the valley for generations now is in the hands of The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Liverpool. It was a sad day when St. Michaels was torn down in the 1970's.
Perhaps the spirit born in that small church is still alive and well, thriving in this valley today! May your visit to this hallowed spot be one of awe and inspiration to all who come here.
Thanks to local historian Pat Campbell for preparing this narrative.
