Ross Errilly Friary was founded in 1351, enlarged in 1498 and became one of Ireland's largest Franciscan Monasteries. It is still one of the best preserved. The buildings here give a vivid idea of what life was like. Ross Errilly had all that was required for a well equipped medieval monastery. Monks were expelled seven times including by Cromwell in 1656, but always returned. It was finally abandoned in 1753 and the buildings have fallen into ruin.
