Bicycle Races, 20, Celebration Ride Into Paris Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

bennet: I checked on this one a couple of days ago. It's gone. Ammo can and all.
I don't plan on replacing it.
I'll do another TdF game this coming year. This one will have no Lance. Interesting.

How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

This cache is the final stage of a caching game celebrating the Tour de France. This cache is the culmination of a contest, a race, a game of gathering points for FTFs, in geocaching terms. Whoever gathers the most points in this game will be first given the coordinates to this final cache, which will contain a trophy award for first place. The cache will also contain awards for second and third places. Please read on.

NOTE: By 26 July 2004, the Bicycle Races cache competition and game was concluded, and awards were distributed. This cache now remains as a standard, traditional cache located at the above coordinates. The cache container is an ammo box.

Bicycle Races players' stats are updated as of 28 July 2004. Stats will not be updated on this page from this point forward as caches that acted as stages in the game are found.

Along with geocaching and other past times, we love cycling. We love to ride bicycles, talk about bicycles, read about bicycles, and watch others ride bicycles.

So July is an exciting month. The Tour de France, cycling's largest world event, kicks off on 3 July with the first stage, the Prologue at Liége. The great race continues on an almost daily basis, ending on 25 July, with the Stage 20 ride, the Montereau-Fault-Yonne-Paris Champs_É'lysées.

This cache correlates to that Stage 20 ride. The Tour is won in the stages preceding the last stage, and the last Stage 20 ride takes a slow and leisurely pace. The last stage is a celebration of the event. Similarly, this cache game will have already been won when this final cache is found. This final cache will contain the prizes for those that won the earlier stages. This final cache will be the celebration of the long series of caches.

This year, American/Texan Lance Armstrong has an excellent potential to become the only cyclist in history to win the Tour six times.

To celebrate the Tour and to show our support for Lance, we have come up with a sort of a "tour de caches". Basically, we are hiding a lot of caches, all around the local area, over the next month. We are hiding one cache for each stage of the tour. So that means a new cache almost daily in the local area for a month. Together, all these caches form a game (or race), in the same manner as the Tour.

We hope that local cachers will participate in this game. Described below are all the ins and outs of how this thing is going to work.

Each cache is a 35mm container that contains a standard log sheet, and each is its own cache, and will exist and remain as a separate cache for as long as any standard cache can be.

Inside each cache is a small clear plastic container that the first finder should take. We are asking anyone who is the first to find one of these caches to please remove and take the internal container, regardless of whether or not he or she is playing the game.

Inside each clear plastic container is a claim ticket. A claim ticket will contain the following information...
  • The name of the cache/stage.
  • An authorization code.
  • The number of miles (points) associated with that cache/stage.
  • Any cacher who is the first to find one of these caches will be awarded the number of miles (points) associated with that cache/stage. If Lance also wins that stage in the Tour, or he is wearing the yellow jersey at the end of that stage in the Tour, or the USPS Team wins the Team Time Trial, then the cacher is awarded double points for that cache/stage.

A cacher will accumulate points for all caches that he/she/they find first. A running total will be kept for each cacher, and the cacher with the highest total by the end of the game will win the game.

The names of the cachers participating in this game will be displayed on this webpage along with their running totals. See below.

    Following are clarifications and rules...
    • Players will claim points by identifying the Authorization Code on their on-line log, by email, or by calling a telephone number. Instructions are on the claim tickets.
    • There is no time limit in claiming points, other than 26 July. For example, if Stage 2 is not found the first day it becomes available, the points can be claimed whenever it is found, even weeks down the road, as long as it is before the game ends on 26 July. Official cutoff for claiming points is 1200noon on 26 July. Any codes that are not received by 1200noon on 26 July will not be considered for points.
    • Only first finders can claim points for a cache/stage. Points cannot be transferred. We are trying to emulate the Tour, and a cyclist who crosses the finish line in second place for a stage cannot get credit for first.
    • Caches will be submitted to approvers/reviewers in sequence and at the rate that the Tour de France progresses. We are at the mercy of the approvers, so the timing of cache postings may not be exact.
    • The points associated with each cache are based on the miles for the corresponding Tour stage as represented by the 7 July issue of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
  • All these caches will be distributed as evenly as possible around the Fort Worth area, extending from west Fort Worth through east Fort Worth and beyond into Arlington and the HEB area, so that no advantages are gained by proximity. However, the caches will not extend into Dallas and the Dallas area. We are based in west Fort Worth and cannot reasonably maintain caches in those areas.
