Geocache Description:

Located in Henry de Tonte Woods along the I & M Canal. Easily accessed by the I & M Canal Bikeway. Park in the lot and walk down the road. Be careful crossing the tracks. There is a grade level crossing with gates. This is a moment of decision for you as there are two paths to take. Please practice 'Leave no Trace', the path from the bikeway to the bridge is easy. Getting to the cache is another story. No bushwhacking required.

Be careful as the hint is a giveaway.

Clue from ‘Dodge the Polara’ …

“To find this cache,
you must act like a troll,
so go under the bridge,
and look for a hole.”

This cache will lead you to a stone bridge constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's. When the bridge was built it was wide enough for only foot traffic one way, as time progressed, and the bike path was constructed, the path was diverted around the bridge. The diversion of the bike path is clearly evident.

The I & M Canal was used as a towpath where barges were towed by horses or mules down the canal. After other methods were used to transport materials and goods the canal fell into disuse. The CCC worked to turn this area into a recreational parkway.

I have biked and hiked in these woods with my family and there are many structures I would like to show you. Since these structures were constructed outside of local jurisdictions many have been neglected and have fallen into serious disrepair but this one has held up surprisingly well, as a testament to its solid construction.

This is the another in a series which will include many different structures.

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a public works program that put over three million young men and adults to work during the Great Depression of the 1930's and 1940's in the United States.

"I propose to create a Civilian Conservation Corps to be used in simple work… more important, however, than the material gains will be the moral and spiritual value of such work." Franklin D. Roosevelt March 9, 1933

You are looking for a 1 quart Tupperware container painted flat black with a log book, pencil and sharpener inside. This cache also contains the usual trinkets for trade.

Dedication:

To Grandpa (whom I have never met but hope to someday), one of the first geocachers in the area and a true master of the hobby.

There are several examples of his caches nearby which show the art of hiding. I felt it was only fitting to dedicate this cache to him.

Be sure to visit his nearby caches I&M canal cache GC417 (geocache #417 which was placed on March 7, 2001!) and Blarney Stone GC3BC9 (which I am sure will amuse and amaze you with the method used to hide). These are examples of how great caches should be.
