Geocache Description:

This is a Traditional geocache located near the Severn Estuary. The cache involves a walk of 2km round trip via a grass footpath with a stile and two kissing gates.

This cache will take you to a little known and fairly quite picnic site with views of the Severn Estuary, and both Severn bridges.

Blackrock used to be the pier for the 'Bristol and South Wales Union Railway' and later the Great Western Railway passenger ferry link to and from 'New Passage' on the English side of the river. This route was replaced by the opening of the Severn Tunnel in 1886. The railway and ferry port are long gone though many features of its history remain but are easily overlooked.

The pinic site is 1.5ha of low cliff-top coastal lawn surrounded by hedges, scrub and small planted trees.

The remains of a Neolithic long barrow can be found nearby (1km) at 51°35.684'N, 2°42.920'W(WGS84) / (ST 50545 88675 OSGB).

The parking area and the main access point to the picnic site can be found on this map (N 51° 35.369 W 002° 42.277(WGS84) / (ST 51282 88084 OSGB).
