Geocache Description:

Rafe’s Chasm is a 10 acre park consisting of woods and ocean rocks, in the Magnolia section of Gloucester. Parking is on Hesperus Ave north of Magnolia center. There is room for 5 or 6 cars. Resist the urge to bushwack and go all the way out the trail to the rocks. The difficulty rating is for the ocean rocks. Be careful . Dogs are allowed on a leash

This area is known as Norman’s Woe and Rafe’s Chasm is a 200 foot long split in the rocks just north of the path. During storms, the waves enter the split with a thundering sound and splash straight upward. A short distance farther north and just off shore is a round rock island that is known as the reef at Norman’s Woe, and was made famous by Longfellow’s poem “ The Wreck of The Hesperus.” I have fond memories of fishing off these rocks with my dad when I was a boy. On clear days you have a view of the Boston skyline and on a super clear day you can just make out the tip of P town.

Once on the rocks you can navigate to the cache but be careful. The cache is a 6”x6”x2” plastic container with a small assortment of trading items and a log book. There is poison ivy here but you need not go near it. NO bushwacking required. There may be muggles so be discrete. Please make sure that the cache is hidden completely when you leave. Thanks and have fun.
