Geocache Description:

Rock Walls National Historic Site

This cache is located near an area where it is thought John Cabot may have landed, or perhaps even died. See the story here:
(visit link)

The rock walls themselves hold quite a significant historic value. Probably amongst the oldest intact rock walls in Newfoundland, these were erected by early settlers for farming purposes. The area itself is quite picturesque, with very rugged but beautiful landscape. Grates Cove is about 2 hours drive from St. John's, but well worth the trip. I highly suggest making a day trip of it and stop in at Northern Bay Sands for a swim, picnic, or even to camp. The drive out also makes for some photo opportunities along the shorline.

Now on to the cache:

Please note that this is a historic site. As such, when removing any rocks to find the cache, please ensure you return it to its original location. The included photo shows esactly which rock is covering the cache.

The cache is a tobacco container located at the base of one of these rock walls, covered by only one rock that needs to be removed to locate it, (see photos). It contains the usual obligatory nic-nacs and log book. The coordinates are an average of 5 readings taken, so they should be very accurate. The location is not hard to get to, and can be reached after a short hike on a well marked trail, but the cache is a little off the trail. This is a great cache for kids.

Have fun with this one, and as always, Happy Hunting!!
