This cache is hidden close to Fine Sand Beach, one of the finest ocean beaches in the Mount Desert Island area.
Fine Sand Beach is a property owned by the town of Swans Island. It has been home to many picnics and gatherings for Swans Islanders and summer people alike. We dare you to take a dip in the ocean -- the water is cold even in the late summer!
To get to Fine Sand Beach, leave the paved road onto a narrow dirt road at N44 09.934 W068 27.570. A small hand-lettered sign by the side of the road marks the turn-off. Park at N44 09.522 W068 28.492. Follow a well worn trail about 1/4 mile to the beach - be careful not to trip over all of the protruding tree roots! (Do NOT follow the gravel road - it is a private road, and it does not go to the beach.)
This cache is one of 3 caches placed over the 2004 July 4th weekend, to mark mainepod's first anniversary of geocaching. As of July 4, 2005, the cache has been moved moved into the woods near the beach, after it was muggled and left empty. There are now 4 geocaches on Swans Island, and we hope this will make the island a Maine geocaching "destination". You will need to coordinate your trip with the Maine State ferry schedule. www.state.me.us/mdot/opt/ferry/215-swan.php During the summer months, car space is at a premium, but there is almost always room for bicycles. The island is great for bicycling; the hilly roads will give you a good workout!
The cache is located in an Army green ammo box, and contains a number of small trading items
