Geocache Description:

Top of the Kane County to ya’! Andy Nelson, where are you? Not here, this is the Top of Kane County, at an elevation of approximately 10,080 feet. If you were looking for the highest Kane County peak (Andrew “Andy” Nelson Peak) you’ll have to look about 1.8 miles south of here and 53 feet lower. See the Peak-A-Boo: Unnamed (Andrew “Andy” Nelson Peak) cache.

Where the heck is the highest point in Kane County, anyway? It’s located in the Dixie National Forest in southwestern Utah, about 18 miles southeast of Cedar City.

After placing nearby Peak-A-Boo: Unnamed (Andrew “Andy” Nelson Peak) cache-- yet another Utah county high peak bagged-- Stockley_True and WeatherGuy didn’t feel they were “high” enough! So, equipped with only a GPS and a sense of adventure-- oh, and a video camera, digital cameras, cell phones, two-way radios, water, food, backpacks fully loaded with maps, geocaching printouts, and all manner of hiking equipment-- they hopped into a fairly new Ford Explorer and set out to concur the 53 feet of elevation they felt they were shortchanged. Mission accomplished!

Similar to the Wasatch County high point, the highest peak in Kane County is not in the same location as the highest point. Both the high point and high peak are near Navajo Lake and are within 1.8 miles of each other as the crow flies. A standard cache (by Peak-A-Boo series standards) has been placed on the high peak too (N37° 31.057 W112° 49.011.) So how about it, are you up for getting high on a two-fer by the "Peak-A-Boo crew" in Kane County?

Giddy-Up, where do I start?

Near Navajo Lake:
(Don’t miss the Zion Canyon Overlook along the way)
· On I-15, take exit 59 eastbound at Cedar City. (Another option from the north would be to exit at Parowan and follow SR-143 up Parowan Canyon past by the colorful Hurricane Cliffs, Brian Head, and Cedar Breaks, before connecting to SR-14.)
· Head east and follow any signage for Cedar Canyon, Cedar Breaks, or Brian Head. It will be approximately 1 mile east to SR-130, then a few blocks south to SR-14, then east into the canyon.
· Follow scenic SR-14 approximately 23 miles up Cedar Canyon to the Navajo Lake turnoff, approximately 5 miles past the SR-143 junction.
· At N37° 32.544 W112° 47.081, near the border between Kane and Iron counties, turn right/west on Forest Service road 0055 that heads west into Deer Valley.
· Continue along this road and turn left/southwest on to Forest Service Road 1642 near N37° 32.919 W112° 48.520.
· Continue southwest on this road as far as you feel comfortable driving. It is possible to drive within feet of the cache with a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle. There are occational places where parking is possible. We parked at N37° 32.819 W112° 48.839.

How long of a hike it takes to find the cache is up to you. It is possible to four-wheel-drive within feet of this cache. There is a cairn-- which we added to-- near the cache location that figures to be the highest point in the area. Our GPS’ seemed to put us in the same area as the cairn. Althouth there is more elevation to the north, keep in mind that the cairn and cache are only a few feet south of the Kane/Iron County Line.

There is a nice viewing spot several hundred feet south of the cache location. Looking south/southeast from that point the Navajo Lake valley can be seen as well as Navajo and Andy Nelson Peaks.

Look around, explore, and have fun-- we did!
