Geocache Description:

A 1.8 mile three part multi-cache over moderate terrain on the Barton Cove peninsula near Turner’s Falls in Gill, Massachusetts. The first two parts are laminated cards that lead to the final cache, which is a two-quart Tupperware container covered with green duct tape.

Park at the paved parking area at: N 42 36.252 W 72 31.921. All cache parts are close to trail. Find the trail just past the big rock next to the paved road and proceed to the first part. Over 10,000 years ago a waterfall once flowed over the peninsula here and created this deep plunge pool.

After finding the coordinates, continue along the trail to the gravel road. After picking up the trail again, head down to the old dinosaur track quarry and the second set of coordinates. The slab on the top of the trail has a few faint tracks. Along the way to the cache you’ll pass a second plunge pool.

After finding the cache, continue to the water’s edge. Look north-east a couple hundred yards to the eagles’ nest. This is as close you can get to the nest without a boat. If you visit in spring or early summer look for the chicks in the nest. Bring your binoculars!

To get back to the parking lot either hike back along the trail, or continue to the end of the peninsula and hike back along the campground road. If you are planning on doing the Eagle View Cache the same day, it would make sense to do it after the Barton Cove Multi-cache.

This 22-mile stretch of river is the lower reservoir for the pumped storage hydroelectric facility operated by Northeast Utilities. Occasionally, especially in summer late in the day when the power plant has been releasing water to generate electricity, the last bit of land toward the eagles’ nest will be flooded.
