Geocache Description:

This cache is located on approximately 174 acres of public property belonging to the Meigs Soil and Water Conservation District, and you'll have to do a little climbing and scrabbling to get to it. Some of the terrain is pretty steep, and you will have to battle both the terrain and the leaf cover. The cache is a camo-painted ammo can.

Warning - Highwalls CAN be dangerous should you fall from one. Be very careful. I would not recommend trying this one at night.

The direct route will require plenty of bushwhacking, but there is also a nice roundabout trail (the Pauline H. Atkins Memorial Trail) which passes near the cache. If you choose to take the trail, see how many different tree species you can identify on your way to the cache (there are more than three dozen). You may also spot some native Big Bluestem grass, Trillium, Fire Pink, Dwarf Larkspur, and many other interesting plants and herbs (no collecting please). As always, cache-in, trash-out.You will probably also see deer and turkey and other wildlife common to southeastern Ohio.
As you near the cache, you will encounter a stone “high wall,” and other remnants of the property’s coal mining history.A limited number of hunters are permitted on the property, so use a little common sense and courtesy during hunting seasons.

Parking is located at N 39 04.663' / W 082 07.255'.

American chestnut seedlings planted on the property are marked with numbered white flags. The American chestnut was almost totally wiped out over 75 years ago by a devastating fungal disease; these trees are part of a program to reintroduce this tree to the wild.

While at the Conservation Area, check out our new 2.2 acre wetland.
