Another easy roadside cache from Progneto
Back in the dustbowl days of the 1930's the government set out to do all they could to provide jobs and to help stop the duststorms that plagued this area of Texas and parts of Oklahoma. Men were sent out to plant rows of trees, sometimes 1/2 mile to a mile long and sometimes 70 or 80 feet wide. These trees would help slow the wind that carried away the area's valuable topsoil. My grandfather used to run a crew of tree planters. He was provided a Model T pickup, a shotgun and all of the shells he needed to shoot any rabbits he saw since they also contributed to the removal of topsoil by eating the vegetation. This particular shelter belt is well known to area oil workers. The road at the northwest corner of the shelter belt runs south to the Canadian River's "North River Road" where there are many oil and gas wells. I used to drive down this road many times when I worked here in the oilfield.
***WARNING*** WATCH FOR RATTLESNAKES IN THIS AREA! A rattlesnake bite will RUIN your day!
