Sort of middle of nowhere like home
In 1981 a group of local aviators developed a section of land, where we could park our airplanes right in our front yards, and take off and fly whenever the urge struck and the weather allowed. This became known as Bates Field, now on the San Antonio sectional chart, named for retired patent agent Marcus Bates.
The actual airport lies about 2.5 miles east of the cache in Midland county although the addresses are Odessa. It's a nice little spot in the middle of nowhere, a small laid-back enclave of paradise.
Having been a teenage pilot, and disillusioned with 5 years of college dormitory and apartment living, I jumped at the chance to own a bit of the countryside. Thus the theme of this cache. The county line is nearby. Is the cache in Ector or Midland county? It was confusing because the mail came from Odessa, but we voted and paid taxes in Midland.
Twenty-two years later, they STILL get it mixed up.Everyone from guests to delivery people had to be "talked in" or a follow-me vehicle sent out just so they could find the place.
Caches made from 55 gallon drums half buried are nothing new to us from the 1980s. It beat hauling the chainsaw and weedeater, tent, sleeping bag, Coleman lantern, etc. from college every weekend and storing it in the dorm room during the week. But of course no one else knew about them as homesteads were carved out of the desert scrub brush.
Watch out for the lead-footed muggles - they don't obey the speed limits, especially when the shift at the sewer plant changes. But you can see em coming for a ways, and there is room to safely park.Initial contents are logbook, pen, some other goodies, and for FTF a brand spanking new travel bug dog tag, plus a special bonus.
