Geocache Description:

The main Angus Glens have often been described as being similar to the fingers of the right hand reaching towards the Cairngorms. This cache is the first of a series covering each "finger".

The location chosen for this cache is the Airlie Monument. It is a replica of one of the towers of Airlie castle, and was built to commemorate the death of the Earl of Airlie in the Boer War. As you approach Glen Prosen from Forfar and Kirriemuir the monument is clearly seen and consequently when you reach the top of the hill there are views over much of Angus.

There is a small car park at N56.44.003 W003.01.761 (the entrance is a dirt track). The entrance of the car park is just past a cairn commemorating the ill-fated Antarctic expedition in 1912 by Captain Scott and Dr Wilson. Although at first seeming a bit out of place in rural Angus, the expedition was actually planned in a nearby house. The ruins by the river close to the cairn also have an unusual international connection. They are the remains of the farm where the opera singer Dame Nellie Melba was born - her parents emigrated to Australia almost immediately after.

The cache is in a black painted ammo box and initially contains : Log Book and pencils, tennis ball, candles, water bombs, maths set, puncture repair kit, plastic ice cubes and erasers

Cache is accesible by buggy although there is a steep hill to climb along a land rover track
