This cache is located in beautiful Jungle Prada Park in Saint
Petersburg. The sign at N27 47.304, W 082 45.157 tells an
interesting tale- historians have placed this area as the site
where Panfilo de Narvaez and the first European explorers visited
North America in 1528.
The cache is a 35mm film container. It is located a few steps off
the boardwalk, but there is no reason to bushwack! Please respect
this property, as it is a preservation area. Depending on when you
visit, parking may be a problem due to the neighboring restaurant;
overflow parking is available closer to the cache. The park closes
at dusk. Please take the time to enjoy this great park with its
variety of habitat. In addition, a small Indian mound is located
here, currently guarded by some of the wild peacocks that roam the
Park Street area. Some history (courtesy of the City of St.
Petersburg): The Jungle Prada complex (now the Saffron's Restaurant
building) was built in 1924 where The Gangplank became St.
Petersburg's first nightclub. Count Bassie and Duke Ellington
played at the Gangplank and Babe Ruth was married there. During the
prohibition era, there was a secret underground tunnel leading from
the bay to Jungle Prada that was used by bootleggers. In the
1920's, the land where Tyrone Square Mall is now located was an
airport. Al Capone and other notorious characters used the airport
for easy access to the Jungle resort area. According to legend, Al
Capone was a part owner of the Jungle Prada nightclub. Saffron's
Restaurant claims that there is still an unopened safe in the
building that dates back to the Al Capone days.
