The Bear Trap Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

chaosmanor: We're going to convert the Bear into a straight cache, so we're closing this one down. Maybe we'll replace it with a different cache, or maybe someone else will get here first.

Geocache Description:

A small plastic container with a blue lid. There is a Where's George dollar and a Canadian Geocoin inside for the first finders. We ask that there be no trading of anything but movable, loggable items, things such as Travel Bugs, geocoins and Where's George dollars. The reason is given below.

This is a park-and-grab. It is part of a series, the final of which is fairly involved, so we wanted to make the earlier caches simple. This road is not especially busy, but traffic is fairly steady, so some reasonable stealth is required. The main purpose for this geocache is to supply part of the information needed to find our geocache, The Bear Went Over the Mountain (GCK0WK). NOTE! As of mid-November, 2004, The Bear has vanished! The Trap and Gun are still there, but the final cache needs to be replaced. The rains this past Winter have prevented us from getting up there, and now the main road is closed, with no time given for it re-opening. Anyone who has found the Trap and the Gun, but not the Bear, will be e-mailed updated info after we replace the cache. Thus, there is only a logbook, a pencil and some laminated pieces of paper inside, plus the two seeded, loggable items. If you intend to hunt for The Bear, then take one of the sheets of paper; you will need it. If you do not wish to hunt for The Bear, then please do not take any of the sheets; just go ahead and sign the logbook, and then post your log. If you aren't sure, better to take one than not We would appreciate it if you would post whether you are going to hunt for the bear, or not, so that we'll know when to replenish the stock of info sheets.

This cache has a companion, called The Bear Gun (GCK159). You will need to find it as well, before you can go bear hunting. There are also info sheets in The Bear Gun. Once you have both sheets, you will need to make a stop in Ojai for a bit of information. The co-ordinates for that spot are on the webpage for The Bear Went Over the Mountain.

Once you find both "prequel" caches, and make your stop in Ojai, you'll have all the information you need for where the bear can be found, and how to get to the best place to set up Base Camp.

Those who take up the challenge to go huntin' fer bar will be rewarded with some fine views, and a grand hiking experience. We hope you go for it. Good luck!
