Geocache Description:

Short uphill walk.

In 1783 the newly appointed Bishop of Derry, now Londonderry, was travelling to Whitehaven to take passage to his diocese in Ireland. Breaking his journey at The Swan, over a few drinks he bet his fellow guests he could ride his pack pony to the top of Barf and on to Lord's seat.He reached the rock, now known as The Bishop's Rock, where the pony stumbled and fell, killing itself and the rider. They were buried at the foot of the scree. The rock marking this spot is known as The Clerk. The landlord of the inn had the rocks whitewashed and this tradition is continued to the present day. The payment to the person(s) who whitewashed the stones was 5 shillings and a quart of ale, but today the price is negotiable annually! Cache contains: Tattoo, reflectors, joke gum, clowns, mood head, paint pot, tweety pen, mini torch and green neon eraser.
