Geocache Description:

A moderate walk through the wood to the lake.

The above co-ordinates will lead you to a First World War Memorial: Work out the following to get the last 3 digits of the cache co-ordinates: N54 24.??? Multiply day of month Fred Fox died By the day of the month George Dugdale died Add the age of Fred Fox when he died W002 57.??? Multiply day of month Cecil Mason died By his age when he died Add on double Harry Mason's age when he died Wray Castle (not a real castle but a private house) and the adjoining church were built for Dr Dawson, a retired Liverpool surgeon, using his wife's inheritance from a gin fortune. Apparently she took one look at it when it was finished, and refused to live in it. The architect, H.P. Horner, drank himself to death. Beatrix Potter’s family rented the house in 1882 and played host to Hardwicke Rawnsley. His views on the importance of preserving nature influenced her to buy and preserve much of Lakeland’s countryside. One of her purchases was the land surrounding the house. In 1929 the house and 64 acres of land were given to the National Trust by Sir Noton and Lady Barclay. Although the house is not open to the public the grounds are, and are well worth visiting for the sake of the specimen trees - wellingtonia, redwood, gingkoa, weeping lime and varieties of beech. From the grounds there are spectacular views across to the Langdales. There is also a mulberry tree planted by William Wordsworth in 1845. Watbarrow Wood is the wooded bank between Wray Castle and the lake, and has several pleasant paths leading through it to the water's edge. THE AREA AROUND THE CACHE SITE HAS UNDERGONE SOME MAINTENANCE (CLEARING OF TREES) BUT REMAINS PICTURESQUE WITH EVEN BETTER VIEWS OF THE LAKE - NO PROBLEMS WITH ACCESS.
