Third in a series of 5 exploring the Mani region of Greece. The real ‘Zorba the Greek’
In 1917, a little known writer called Nikos Kazantzakis arrived in Stoupa from Crete and established a small lignite (a volatile coal) mine in the cliffs behind Stoupa. He recruited an engineer from northern Greece to help him so Giorgos Zorbas came to Stoupa and a legend was born.
There is not much left of the mines now, all flooded, but there is the odd clue on the beach at Stoupa where the lignite was transported away. The old offices are now a private villa.
In 1946 Nikos Kazantzakis published the novel ‘Zorba the Greek’ and a legend was born. The book became a film in 1964 with Anthony Quinn playing Zorba, winning 7 Oscars and with a memourable score by Mikis TheodorakisBut it is here on Kalogria Beach is where we will focus our attention.
The co-ordinates given are for the recently erected bust of Nikos Kazantzakis but it is from here you must establish the final co-ords for the cache.
There are three dates given on the plinth, the first two are for the period when he resided here:-
ABAC-ABAD
And the third date marks the 40th anniversary of his death.
ABBE
By substituting the numbers for the letters you can obtain the final co-ords.
36 51.(B-D-A)(D-E)(E)22 15.(C-E)(D)(B)
These will lead you to a small wall right outside Zorba’s hut that he lived in whilst here, whether or not it is still stands it is hard to say but it looks as if it was amalgamated into the buildings that are now there. This is a highly public spot, so care must be taken in removing the cache. It is buried in the wall, lying between the adjacent tree and the beach and some 30cm down from the top.
The cache is a 35mm black film cannister containing log sheets, Geocache Info, and some assorted coins, but no pencil, please bring your own.
