Probably the best way to get to this cache is via a 5-6 hour backpacking trip from Agnew Meadows near Mammoth Lakes, CA. If you are a HARD MAN, you might be able to bag this cache (car-to-car) in 6-8 hours. The cache is about 5-7 miles from Agnew Meadows depending on which route you take.
About 63 feet north of the cache is a wonderful camp site overlooking a GORGEOUS lake (and island) and an incredible mountain view!
BACKPACKING LOGISTICS:
1. You MUST obtain a (free) back-country permit from the forest service visitors center on the right side of the road as you get into Mammoth Lakes on HWY 203. If you intend on backpacking to this site, you will also need a bear food container, water pump, food, tent, etc.
2. Drive from Mammoth Lakes towards Mammoth Mountain Ski Area and drive over the summit down to Agnew Meadows. If you get to the summit before 7 AM, you will not have to pay $7.00 per person.
3. You might want to take the "River Trail" to get to the Cache Site.
4. The Cache is at about 10,000 feet elevation. You might want to acclimate to the altitude by staying in Mammoth Lakes for a day or two before going. Please make sure you drink LOTS of water along the way, and take a water filter.
5. Also make sure you take some GOOD bug repelent, sun screen and lip goo or you'll be sorry!
