Swallow Canyon Cache is located near Augusta, Montana...use common sense when weather is rainy or snowy...small vehicles can get you to the parking spot.
This is located on State Land.
Drive south out of Augusta, Montana...on highway 434/435. (This road is the road STRAIGHT THROUGH Augusta, if you are coming from Great Falls...just keep going straight through town(check your mileage as you leave Augusta)...if you are coming to Augusta from the Helena direction, turn LEFT as you come into Augusta.(check your mileage as you leave Augusta). Drive about 6 miles out of Augusta (SOUTH) to the ELK CREEK ROAD.(There is a road sign here). This road heads WEST off of highway 434/435. Once on the ELK CREEK ROAD, drive about 1.25-1.5 miles to coordinates N.47 24.156 W.112 29.220. There is a gate to your right, or WEST. The gate is locked, BUT THIS IS STATE LAND! You can enter here, if you have a dog and there are cattle or other livestock, please restrain your pets. But this is state land and you are free to geocache, just do not disturb the land or livestock. Do Not let the locked gate stop you from trying this cache. From the parking spot, head WEST...you will be able to see the signs of an OLD COUNTY ROAD...ignore your GPS unit for awhile and follow the OLD COUNTY ROAD down the hill.(Ignoring your GPS unit for awhile will save you some cliff climbing!) Continue following the road and enjoy the beautiful scenery...You will see "where the road ends"...From this point your GPS should read approx 50-75 feet. Look to your left and see a "rapids" area of the stream...I took my boots off and crossed here(The stream is not too deep, I didn't even get my calves wet)...Follow your GPS after you have waded the stream...
Cache is a standard Geocaching Ammo Box, with goodies...
This cache is located on State Land.
You must either have a current Montana Fishing License, Montana Hunting License, or a State Lands Permit(about $5.00) to enter. If you have any of these, you are free to geocache on any of Montana State Lands. (If you have to cross private land to GET TO state land, the rules change...but if you can access state land directly from a road, you are OK!
Or you can do like we do in this area of Rural Montana, and just plead the 5th; and just geocache for fun! The chances of someone confronting you in this area of Montana are slimmer than winning the lottery. (WE DO ask permission to place caches on questionable or Private property!)
