Summit of Mt. Decoli. Terrain ranges from dried river bed (very rocky) to alpine meadow (very pleasant) to Yukon alpine (very extreme). Hike takes 8-10 hours, 18 km round-trip, to height of approx 7530 feet. Take 1 L water and sweater (can be windy). PLEASE TRADE ONLY USEFUL/HIGH QUALITY ITEMS!
This cache overlooks Kluane National Park (though NOT technically within the park, Parks Canada can provide trail information and maps in Haines Junction, or online
From the summit on a clear day, you can see:
1) Mt Logan (Canada's tallest, world's most MASSIVE) @ 250 degrees (compass direction, that is)
2) Kennedy/Hubbard/Alverstone ice fields @ 230 degrees (Largest non-polar ice fields in the world)
3) Kluane Lake, Kathleen Lake, Mt. Archibald, rock glaciers, ice glaciers and various other beauties.
Various wildlife may be encountered, especially ground squirrels and my favourite, the hoary Marmot. Fresh grizzly scat abound, caribou tracks and Dall Sheep.
IN ONE WORD: PRIMORDIAL!
Contents of cache include glow sticks, toe warmers, a pool lounger I used for cache GCHV59, a rain poncho, sunglasses, and various other useful treats and hiking gear.
Winter conditions are BEYOND EXTREME, so make sure the cache is ALWAYS well secured before leaving!
REQUEST: SOMEONE PLEASE REPLACE THE RUBBERMAID CACHE WITH SOMETHING WEATHER-PROOF! Imagine my shock to find out rubbermaids are not designed for Yukon mountaintops.
