Fifth in a series of 5 exploring the Mani region of Greece
The Caves at Pirgos DirouThese caves, found accidentally in 1958 are thought to be equal in stature to that of the Jeita Caves in Lebanon and the Gouffre de Padirac Caves in France. They are also thought to extend as far as Sparta some 60km inland. These are caves of fresh water (although they only lie a metre above the sea level outside) and can been seen by escorted punt ride that lasts for about 40 minutes. This you have to pay for, and can get very busy in the height of summer. The cache has been hidden outside in an area that does not require payment and consists of 35mm black film cassette, log sheet, and some small coinage but no pencil, please bring your own.
