Trestle Treasure Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Maasmen: Well, after much thought, we've decided to retire this one. We couldn't find a waterproof container sufficiently large to make this one work. Thanks for the memories.

Geocache Description:

Cache is located along Stenner Creek Road just north of San Luis Obispo, California.

Here's a cache for you railroad buffs. During the 1880s, Southern Pacific Railroad decided to push a standard gauge railroad south from San Jose. However, the rough terrain and the difficulties of Cuesta Grade kept the railroad from continuing the line any further south than Templeton, California, where the line ended in 1889. Passengers had to disembark and catch a stagecoach the last few miles of the journey. A couple of years later, Southern Pacific decided to dare an engineering feat and sucessfully completed eight tunnels and a trestle over a 2.2% incline challenge. The last portion included some of the sharpest turns for standard guage. The railroad finally entered San Luis Obispo five years later in 1894.

This cache is located at the bottom of the Stenner Creek trestle bridge. If you're lucky, you may be able to catch a train overhead.
