This cache is located behind the Adelaida Cemetery in the historic town of Adelaida, California.
Adelaida has a long and rich history. Once the primary route for trade between the middle Salinas Valley and the packet steam ships of the Pacific, Adelaida became a thriving community of six to seven hundred inhabitants, served by three post offices, six schools, two stores, three churches, and two dance halls - today it is a sleepy little hollow best known for its haunted cemetery. The last post office closed in 1936.The legend says that as a young minister, Frank Sitton brought his young bride Charlotte to Adelaida. They had a beautiful little boy who died at the tender age of two in a diphtheria epedemic. Becoming distraught over her loss, and unable to think clearly, Charlotte committed suicide. She was only 19. Now, every Friday night, between the hours of ten and midnight, Charlotte's ghost comes to lay flowers on her boy's grave. Is it true? I don't know. The cemetery only allows visitors from dawn to dusk, weather permitting. For this geocache, you'll need to park off of Adelaida Road and walk through the cemetery. The cache is behind the fence in the back - please do not climb over and damage the fence, there's a handy gate out the backside. While you're in the cemetery, you may want to see if you can find the grave of William Antrim, the step-father of Billy the Kid who died in Adelaida in 1922.Now, I for one, do not believe in ghosts, but I am aware from observation that if you are too intent on finding a phantom and careless where you're walking, you may notice a mysterious rash develop on your skin. Eventually, the infected area will itch terribly and blister. If so, you've been visited by poison oak - so please tread carefully and know what it looks like before you go.And a final note... sadly, because of the notarity of the graveyard, the young and ill-mannered have tended to leave their trash strewn all over the necropolis. I have left three grocery bags in the cache - if the disrespect for the dead bothers you also, feel free to use them to CITO (Cache In Trash Out). Or bring a bag yourself and let's help honor the memory of a fine community and those who've lived in Adelaida.
