Gratwick Riverside Park is North Tonawanda's largest park. It was opened in June of 2001. The 53 acre park offers a boat launch, pavilion, park benches and a paved path offering a beautiful view of the Niagara River. You can see the towers and mist of Niagara Falls from here. The park has become a popular site for kite flyers. On the third Sunday of each month the Great Lakes Inc. kite flying club paints the sky with unusual and colorful kites.
Growing up in North Tonawanda, in the Gratwick section of town, this spot was often visited. Early on it was one of many Niagara County Waste Disposal Sites. I believe this was # 133 and Love Canal was #19. This is where my Dad launched his boat. This is where we watched the Fourth of July fireworks. We had picnics here or came after supper just to walk along The Mighty Niagara. I seem to recall something about watching submarine races here with my boyfriend... Eventually the park was closed for reclaimation and you see it now after the completion of that project. The cache is easily accessible along the path that goes into the "No Mow Zone". An effort to provide a natural setting for the many birds and wildlife of the area. So bring a kite, a picnic, a camera or a boat and stop a bit to enjoy the view. PLease, as always, be aware of park muggles! The cache is a now a Lock 'n Lock that has been cleverly hidden. Please return it as you found it! The park is now open DAWN to DUSK, so PLEASE do not attempt this after dark.
