This area was at the edge of the blast zone when Mount Saint Helens
blew in 1980. Weyerhauser lost 68,000 acres of trees in the blast.
Wayerhauser will probably not log this area in 2028 with the
nearby conifers because alder trees have grown up on the trail.
This would be quite a peaceful place if it weren't for the sounds
of cars going over the bridge nearby. Speaking of alder trees, the
drive in from I-5 is amazing because I remember such devestation
when I first saw it 15 years ago. Now for many of the areas of the
river alder trees have replaced bare rock and ash.
On your way in the last gas station is about mile 19.
