Geocache Description:

This virtual is located on the Brough of Birsay a small tidal island off the north-west tip of mainland Orkney, on which there are extensive remains of a Viking Age and Pictish settlements. The buildings and artefacts discovered here make the Brough of Birsay one of the most important as well as one of the most attractive monuments in Scotland.

Not only was this site a Norse settlement established in the early ninth century but it was also home to native Pictish peoples in the seventh and eighth centuries. Evidence of both communities have been well documented giving this site a unique importance.

Signposted from Birsay Village some 32km (20 miles) north-west of Kirkwall, there is a car park on the Point of Buckquoy. The Brough of Birsay is a tidal island and access along the causeway is possible only for about two hours on either side of low tide (information about tides are available from the Tourist Information Centre in Kirkwall).

Upon reaching the site you must answer these questions and e-mail me in order to log the cache.
1.What is the object on the ground and who made it?
2.How was it built?
